May 22, 2009, Newsletter Issue #199: Reading Hitters, Part 9

Tip of the Week

A ball set off the net, but high, will usually be hit cross court. On the left side, if the hitterīs shoulder is aligned so that the ball is nearer the sideline than the hitterīs shoulder, the ball will likely be hit straight or down the line.

A spiker making a late approach will generally hit angle. Theyīre just concerned with salvaging some kind of attack, not with doing anything fancy at that point.

If a spiker runs underneath the ball too far, that ball will usually be hit deep in a looping fashion or something off-speed.
